Age Effect in the Morphological Traits Performance for Sex Determination in Human Skulls and Mandibles International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a...

Analysis of Bone Variations of the Occipital Bone in Man International Journal of Morphology
da Mata,João Roberto; da Mata,Fabiana Ribe; Aversi-Ferreira,Tales Alexandre.
Inadequate ossification of the interparietal region induces the appearance of interparietal and wormian bones, also associated with genetic factors. The formation of the interparietal bone depends on the separation of the intermediate segment from the lateral plate by the transverse occipital suture, which means that this bone is formed by the medial and lateral plates. Wormian interparietal bones or epactal bones are located within the interparietal region, being single or multiple, and are located in the upper central region of the interparietal region, the sutural bones, however, are formed from additional ossification centers that can occur in near sutures. The aim of this work was to macroscopically evaluated the presence of changes in the structure...

Morphological Analysis on the Occipital Condyles and Review of the Literature International Journal of Morphology
Aragão,José Aderval; de Santana,Guilherme Machado; da Cruz de Moraes,Rebeca Zelice; Aragão,Iapunira Catarina Sant'Anna; Aragão,Felipe Matheus Sant'Anna; Reis,Francisco Prado.
Most anatomical and biomechanical studies on the craniovertebral junction have involved morphological or morphometric analysis on the occipital condyles. Some of these studies have provided important findings based on different surgical procedures. The shape, size and angle of the occipital condyles and the locations of the intracranial and extracranial orifices of the hypoglossal canal are highly important because they may affect the lateral approaches to the craniovertebral junction. To determine the frequency of occurrence of different morphological types of occipital condyle. 214 occipital condyles in 107 dry human skulls were analyzed and the classification of their morphological types was determined through assessing digitized photographic images....

Interparietal Bone Variations in Accordance with their Ossification Centres in Human Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Khan,Aaijaz Ahmed; Ullah,Muzammil; Asari,Mohd. Asnizam; Hassan,Asma.
The upper interparietal segment of the squamous part of the occipital bone develops in membrane and the lower supraoccipital part develops in cartilage. According to the available literature, the interparietal segment is ossified from 2 to 3 pairs of ossification centres and each of these centres has 2 nuclei. Interparietal bone is formed due to failure of fusion of these centres and/or their nuclei with each other. Many variations of interparietal bone have been reported by many investigators. In the present study, out of 25 human skulls studied, six skulls had some interesting variations of interparietal bones. Four interparietal bones were found in one skull, 2 interparietal bones were observed in another skull and the remaining four skulls had a single...

Cranial Osteology of the Armadillo Chaetophractus villosus (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) International Journal of Morphology
Squarcia,Silvia Margarita; Sidorkewicj,Nora Silvia; Casanave,Emma Beatriz.
The morphology and morphometry of the cranial bones of Chaetophractus villosus were studied. The skull components are morphologically similar between adults of both sexes, and follow the generalized pattern for most of described dasypodids. The morphometric analysis, however, demonstrated that the bones lying in the rostrocaudal plane are mostly longest in females, determining higher values of the total, basal and condilobasal lengths of the skull, which are the main variables that contribute to a sexual dimorphism in this species

Anatomic Variants of Foramen Ovale and Spinosum in Human Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Khan,Aaijaz Ahmed; Asari,Mohd Asnizam; Hassan,Asma.
Foramen ovale and spinosum are important foramina of the greater wing of the sphenoid. Normal variations in their shapes and sizes are quite common and widely studied. In the present study, conducted in the Department of Anatomy of School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 25 dried human skulls were examined for anatomic variations of the foramina of the greater wing of the sphenoid. During the study, we noticed anatomic variations of the foramen ovale and spinosum. In one skull, there was an abnormally large and irregular foramen ovale which was confluent with the foramen spinosum. In the second skull, the foramen spinosum was absent on the left side and in the 3rd skull it was duplicated on the right side. These variations are very rare and...

A Morphological Study of the Dorsum Sellae in Human Skull International Journal of Morphology
Haider,Syed Javed; Rezigalla,Assad Ali; Abdalla,Asim Mohammed.
Anatomical variations in the shape and dimension of the dorsum sellae and posterior clinoid process are common. Most textbooks describe its shape as a median rectangular plate, a square plate, or a transverse ledge on a slope behind the sella turcica (hypophyseal fossa). This work aims to study the dorsum sellae of human skull. One hundred and twenty five dried adult human skulls, irrespective of age, were used for the study. Detailed features of the dorsum sellae were noted and classified into five types: crest like, thin plate, frail quadrilateral plate, heavy square plate, thick elongated plate. Fusion of the posterior and middle clinoid processes in one (unilateral) and all the clinoid processes (anterior, middle, and posterior) in three skulls...
