In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a... |

Inadequate ossification of the interparietal region induces the appearance of interparietal and wormian bones, also associated with genetic factors. The formation of the interparietal bone depends on the separation of the intermediate segment from the lateral plate by the transverse occipital suture, which means that this bone is formed by the medial and lateral plates. Wormian interparietal bones or epactal bones are located within the interparietal region, being single or multiple, and are located in the upper central region of the interparietal region, the sutural bones, however, are formed from additional ossification centers that can occur in near sutures. The aim of this work was to macroscopically evaluated the presence of changes in the structure... |

The phenotypic appearance of the head of animal species depends strongly on the shape of the skull. The present study has been carried out on morphological and radiographic characteristics of skull of the Indian Blackbuck. The skull comprised of cranial and facial bones. The cranial bones included occipital, sphenoid, ethmoid, interparietal, parietal, frontal and temporal. The occipital was a single bone surrounding the foramen magnum. The sphenoid was a single bone and situated between the occipital posteriorly and the ethmoid anteriorly. The ethmoid was a single bone laid ventral to the frontal and nasal bones. The interparietal was a small quadrilateral bone wedged in between the parietal anterio-laterally and the supraoccipital posteriorly. The... |

In human identification for forensic purposes the sex is one of the most important and first features to be assessed in each case. Baudoin condylar index is a sex determination method based on measurements of length and width of the occipital condyle. The aim of this research was to apply the Baudoin condylar index for sex determination, and evaluate its reliability. The sample was composed of 100 Brazilian human skulls, 50 male and 50 female from São Gonçalo cemetery, City of Cuiabá, Brazil. The measurement values were statistically analyzed in order to compare the matching rate for each sex, each side, as well as the overall average. The results showed that the overall percentage of success in applying the Baudoin index was 44.83% to males, and 51.93% to... |

Foramen ovale and spinosum are important foramina of the greater wing of the sphenoid. Normal variations in their shapes and sizes are quite common and widely studied. In the present study, conducted in the Department of Anatomy of School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 25 dried human skulls were examined for anatomic variations of the foramina of the greater wing of the sphenoid. During the study, we noticed anatomic variations of the foramen ovale and spinosum. In one skull, there was an abnormally large and irregular foramen ovale which was confluent with the foramen spinosum. In the second skull, the foramen spinosum was absent on the left side and in the 3rd skull it was duplicated on the right side. These variations are very rare and... |

Knowledge about human skull asymmetry in normal dry specimens is useful as a parameter for medical and dentistry practice. Skull base was investigated with the objective to validate the method of indirect measurement with digital pictures and to evaluate the degree of asymmetry from human skull base in different ages. We analyzed 176 normal identified human skulls, divided by age in the following groups: Fetuses, newborn, children and adults. Measures were taken from a central point: pharyngeal tubercle and 4 lateral points: foramen ovale, foramen spinosum, carotid canal and stylomastoid foramen using digital biometry after a comparative validation with directed method performed with caliper. Results were presented as asymmetry indexes and data were... |

Anatomical variations in the shape and dimension of the dorsum sellae and posterior clinoid process are common. Most textbooks describe its shape as a median rectangular plate, a square plate, or a transverse ledge on a slope behind the sella turcica (hypophyseal fossa). This work aims to study the dorsum sellae of human skull. One hundred and twenty five dried adult human skulls, irrespective of age, were used for the study. Detailed features of the dorsum sellae were noted and classified into five types: crest like, thin plate, frail quadrilateral plate, heavy square plate, thick elongated plate. Fusion of the posterior and middle clinoid processes in one (unilateral) and all the clinoid processes (anterior, middle, and posterior) in three skulls... |

The sex determination from human skulls can be made by means of morphologic and morphometric methods have been broadly studied. These methods contribute with objective data; however, they present interpopulational variability. The purpose of this article is to determine sexual dimorphism using lineal dimensions in a sample of human skulls collection belonging to the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), calculating the discriminant function. To complete the selection approaches, 226 skulls were analyzed. Mensurements were carried out among the following reference points of the skull: right Eurion- left Eurion (Eu - Eu), Glabella-Opisthocranion (Gla - Op), Basion - Bregma (Ba-Br), Nasion - Prosthion (Na-Pr), Bizigomatic (Zi-Zi), Maximal width of the... |

It is known that there exists close relationship between cranial capacity and size of the brain. Several studies have estimated the cranial capacity, which indirectly reflects the brain volume in different populations. The aim of this study was to estimate cranial capacity of a particular age group of population of Madhya Pradesh. This study was carried out on 400 healthy 20-25 year old (200 male and 200 female) individuals of Madhya Pradesh state of India, by using linear dimensions of head (Lee Pearson's formula). The mean cranial capacity and SD in males & females were 1380.52±94.63 cc and 1188.75±91.16 cc respectively. This study has shown a significant (p<0.05) difference between male and female population, being higher in males than in... |

Piriform aperture and nasal bone contribute to the formation of the nose. Its morphology varies according to ethnic group and gender. The piriform apertures and nasal bones of 97 individuals were examined radiographically through Caldwell radiographic technique and the types of nasal bones were classified according to Hwang et al. (2005). The width, height and area of piriform aperture were measured to demonstrate the difference according to gender. Statistical analysis was performed from the Student t test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The most frequent type of nasal bone was A, and D was the most uncommon in both genders. In the Student t test significant differences between genders, height, width and area of the piriform aperture were obtained and... |
